Overview

Bradley Macmaster

I am an experienced financial services professional with 10 years of experience in top and mid-tier CA firms in Canada. In addition, I bring over 20 years of industry and executive experience as the former CFO of several high-growth companies (private and public) to inform my academic career. I joined Ryerson as a contract lecturer in 2009 and have helped students in Professional Masters in Accounting and the MBA / MTI Programmes, and the TRSM Business Management, Entrepreneurship & Strategy, Hospitality & Tourism Management, and Creative Industries “get a grip” on the basics of financial management for their respective domains. I was appointed Assistant Professor, in August, 2017. In addition to teaching, I am currently completing my PhD in entrepreneurial finance.

I have taught over 20 accounting, finance, entrepreneurship and other management courses at several universities across Canada and internationally reaching over 10,000 students, in undergraduate, MBA, executive MBA, and professional accounting programmes. I have developed 7 of these courses which focus on helping students become functional in financial management to advance their careers and grow their businesses. In addition, I am the financial faculty member for two recurring management training & certification programmes: club management and film & television.

My research focuses on enhancing the working relationships within entrepreneurial teams to augment enterprise performance and improve the reward/risk profile for founders and capital providers. In particular, I am interested in understanding how to advance the effective utilization of entrepreneurially-oriented CFOs within early-stage, high-growth ventures. Additional research interests include the investment decision-making process for funding new ventures (including business angels and crowd funding) and ways and means of learning / teaching modes of thinking to support transformational entrepreneurship.

I am currently working on my dissertation as a PhD researcher with The Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at the Strathclyde Business School,(Glasgow, UK).

Goals & Objectives
I developed an innovative course in financial management basics for independent business. The development was based on research into the challenges of learning and teaching intro-level financial subjects at university. It has proven to be effective in helping students become functional and confident in this important career skill and is innovative in both content and pedagogy. I have based three subsequent courses or workshops on this approach and aim to broaden the availability of this course (ACC340) or its approach within business education curricula throughout Ryerson.
